July
28, 2008 Dear Marji: Please accept this letter of thanks for the donations
of blankets and throws for our elderly from Restoring the Hoop, and for your
continuing support of our people over the past year.
In a culture that is supposed to value and care for our elderly, it
is shocking to me that many of our elders have to struggle to survive.
It is very heartening to see the appreciation in their eyes when we
distribute the things you have sent us in the past.
As you are aware, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
is one of the poorest areas in the United States when speaking of
poverty-level subsistence, unemployment, severe housing shortages. Our people are proud but struggle to feed and clothe their
children because of high levels of unemployment. Our elders are on fixed incomes and seldom can afford
to get anything nice for themselves, such as a warm throw to curl up with
when it gets chilly. The gifts you bring are very welcome.
The elderly not only benefit from your efforts but we
have also given a few of the blankets to the domestic violence victims we
serve as well. Many times
women have to set up a new household for their children when they flee an
abusive relationship, often without the most basic of the household and
personal items the rest of us take for granted.
We look forward to our continuing collaboration in
getting these items to those who need them most. Your continuing support and generosity is sorely needed and
appreciated. Again, thank you for your generous assistance.
We will continue to support your efforts and assist you wherever we
can.
Respectfully, George Twiss
